The environment and natural resources are key assets for rural people and land, agriculture and livestock are at the core of livelihood strategies.

CARE South Africa-Lesotho The economies of Lesotho and South Africa are inextricably linked, with Lesotho's economy being dependent on South Africa's relatively industrialised economy. A common challenge for poor people in both countries is access to regular income and economic opportunities. In South Africa trying to resolve this challenge involves linking marginalised communities to opportunities in the mainstream formal economy, while in Lesotho this involves creating income generation opportunities in a relatively under-developed economy. CARE South Africa-Lesotho In South Africa and Lesotho the prevalence of HIV /AIDS has reached catastrophic proportions and presents real threats to the livelihoods of communities where CARE is operating. Under this theme, CARE has a number of interesting on-going and planned initiatives, which have enabled the development of HIV /AIDS prevention, care, support and mitigation programmes with civil society, government and the private sector. The advent of democracy in both South Africa and Lesotho has not lead to reduced inequality and poverty - for reasons that are hotly debated. But it is clear that just laws, enabling policy frameworks and capable public and civil institutions that offer the poor a voice, are critical to alleviating poverty and deepening democracy.
