South African Government’s HIV/AIDS information website. Provides some good basic information on HIV and AIDS, access to Khomanani materials (leaflets and posters), as well as some other links. An attractive-looking but not very user-friendly site.

An HIV/AIDS information portal for Southern Africa for researchers, health professionals, policy makers, educators and the general public. Lots of news content and information about up-coming events. Information on this portal is derived from scientific research with a southern African focus.

The AIDS Consortium is a network of over 1000 members, mainly community-based organisations focusing on HIV/AIDS related issues. Runs a new capacity building programme for CBOs. Reasonable links page to the usual organizations as well as some unusual links.

The AIDS Law Project at WITS University provides information on all aspects of HIV/AIDS and the law, with a focus on human rights and discrimination. The ALP site provides access to legal judgements and a host of other information – egg on privacy and confidentiality. The ALP will take up cases on behalf of people whose rights have been infringed. A colourful and user-friendly website, with useful links to similar organisations in the region and around the world.

Lovelife is a national HIV and AIDS prevention programme for youth, which includes a high profile billboard and print media campaign. While pages on the site can take some time to download, there are chat forums for young people and there is useful information for parents on how to talk to their children about sex. The site has a funky feel and talks to youth in a language they can understand (although that language is English…)

Health Economics and HIV/AIDS Research Division, University of KwaZulu-Natal. HEARD conducts research on the socio-economic aspects of public health, especially HIV/AIDS. It is based in South Africa at the University of Natal, but its operations are international in scope.

South Africa Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS. This site provides a wealth of information, case studies, surveys etc on HIV and AIDS in the workplace. SABCOHA provides a toolkit for managing HIV/AIDS in the workplace.

The Treatment Action Campaign. The TAC’s main objective is to campaign for greater access to HIV treatment for all South Africans, by raising public awareness and understanding about issues surrounding the availability, affordability and use of HIV treatments. Very useful website, containing a lot of information, and updated regularly.

Rural AIDS & Development Action Research Group’s programmes comprise clinical and social intervention research on HIV/AIDS, with an emphasis on developing model approaches that are appropriate and relevant to the rural African context. Useful site for people working in a rural context, although the site does not appear to have been updated since May 2003.

The AIDS Media Center web site is for media professionals reporting on national and global issues of HIV/AIDS. The center is sponsored by the World Bank, in partnership with UNAIDS, Kaiser Family Foundation, Panos and Internews among others. The goal of the project is to broaden journalists' knowledge of HIV/AIDS and improve the depth, quality and impact of their HIV coverage.

Website of the Terence Higgins Charitable Trust in the UK. Contains clear basic information on a range of themes not usually explored in southern Africa, such a living in a relationship where one partner is positive and the other is not, gay sex, oral sex etc.
